beaches around torrance

When people think of California, the first thing the mind goes to is its beaches. With the sprawling coastline and warm temperatures, beaches are an absolute must when it comes to great activities to do here.

If you’re located in the Torrance area, then you’re extra lucky because this city is right by the ocean!

In this article, we’ll explore the best beaches in and around Torrance to make your summer experience a great one.

1. Torrance Beach

As we’ve mentioned, being in Torrance means you’re lucky to have a beach at your doorstep! There’s no need to go far if you don’t want to. Torrance Beach is a great beach!

Torrance Beach is the southernmost beach of the Santa Monica Bay area. This extends from the Palos Verdes Peninsula to Malibu.

If Torrance Beach doesn’t sound familiar, you may recognize it from its nickname RAT beach. This stands for a variety of things like Right After Torrance, Redondo And Torrance, and Right At Torrance.

Torrance Beach stretches 1.5 miles down the California coastline. It’s widely recognized for the pristine sand on its shores and its stunning sunsets.

The beach begins at Miramar Park to the north and ends in Malaga Cove Beach to the south. Unlike the neighboring beaches, Torrance Beach is usually quieter. This means you can fully enjoy a relaxing day by the ocean, whether you’re sunbathing or surfing.

This beach is very family-friendly and frequented by the locals.

If you’re concerned about parking, you’ll be happy to know that Torrance Beach has a large parking lot that’s located by Paseo De La Playa, beginning in Via Riviera and ending in Calle Miramar. However, be wary of going further south than this area as the beach access becomes private and it could be seen as trespassing on the homes there.

Torrance Beach also has ramps for accessibility to the beach, access to a bike path, lifeguards, and great facilities.

Everything you could want is here!

2. Redondo County Beach

Like Torrance Beach, Redondo County Beach is a 1.5-mile stretch along the California coastline. It’s a quick drive from Torrance.

The beach begins at the Redondo Beach Pier located by Veterans Park and extends down to a series of homes and condos. It then resumes and becomes South Redondo Beach.

Other names for this beach include State Beach, County Beach, and City Beach. This is because it’s actually operated by Los Angeles County.

The most popular part of the beach is by the pier since the beach is more accessible from this spot and there are more parking options. You can find street parking by the Esplanade. There are multiple stairways and ramps branching off from here to the beach.

When it comes to activities, in South Redondo Beach, there are a ton of volleyball courts to take advantage of. As for swimming, you’ll be glad to know it’s incredibly safe here as lifeguard stations line the entire Redondo Beach shoreline. You’ll also find the Marvin Braude Coastal Bike Trail that runs behind the beach.

For those who enjoy surfing the most, Redondo Beach is an exciting spot as it claims to be the birthplace of California surfing.

3. Manhattan County Beach

Manhattan County Beach is the city of Manhattan Beach’s favorite oceanside spot. Located a stone’s throw away from Torrance, you’ll have no trouble making the trip here! This beach explodes in popularity during the summer weekends, often being referred to as a “madhouse.” And, that popularity is for good reason! It hosts a ton of fun beach events.

Manhattan County Beach stretches two miles down the shoreline. The massive size of this beach means you’re sure to find a great sunbathing spot on its white sand shores! It begins at 1st street and ends by Rosecrans Avenue. Then, it transitions into El Porto Beach.

A whopping 100 sand volleyball courts are free to use here, and lifeguard stations are evenly placed along the coast. A bike trail that links Torrance to Santa Monica runs behind the beach, so if driving isn’t your style, you can always bike here.

The beach is also home to the Roundhouse Marine Studies Lab and Aquarium which is free to the public to visit any day other than holidays.

4. Venice Beach

Located by the famed Venice District of Los Angeles, this beach begins at the Venice Pier and ends down by Santa Monica’s city border. This is a longer trek than the other beaches on this list (about a 40-minute drive from Torrance), but the trip is worth it.

The main part of Venice Beach is called Muscle Beach, a local nickname thanks to all the outdoor workout facilities there.

Out of all the beaches, Venice Beach holds the most draw for those looking to see new things.

For instance, there’s a giant skatepark built on the beach! Also, there’s a wide variety of street performers who often call themselves “freaks” for their tattoos and performances.

Finally, the waves go in two directions, making it perfect for surfers to take advantage of.

There’s a public parking lot located on Venice Boulevard, as well as side streets to park on. While you’re in the area, don’t miss out on all the local restaurants, ice cream shops, and stores too!

Bottom Line

Torrance is a great place to be in if you’re a fan of the beach!

While Torrance has its own wonderful beach to visit, the nearby beaches on this list are sure to lead to an enjoyable day in the sun for you as well.

It’s hard to go wrong with the California coast!
